The phrase that pretty much sums up my view of turntables is “they don’t make them like they used to”. Logically there has been modern technology injected into the more recent versions of turntables with USB ports, wireless speakers, editing software and what not but at what cost?
What is my logic behind that ever so common phrase? Technology has become cheaper and much more accessible for people all over the world. This has seen many new brands come and go. Forget this. The best turntable brands are those with experience, brands established 50-100 years ago. Experience does equate to quality, although not necessarily the grand price but with the maneuverability of lightweight portability.

Although a slightly more traditional turntable compared to my number two, it keeps up in sound quality and for those wanting a turntable to play vinyl records, and this is the queen or king of the best portable turntables. It’s simplistic design, with two speeds 33 1/3 and 45 RPM does not mess around. This model does come in Silver, Black, Blue and Red for those wanting to match their décor or personality. This model is a portable turntable and that’s it, no fancy functions that in no way has affected this product’s popularity or sound quality at a very reasonable price.

Aesthetically I think the best way to describe it is halfway between the extremely modern Audio Technica (number 1) and the more retro Jensen (number 2). This model also sits somewhere between number 1 and 3 feature wise, with a more traditional feel in terms of automatic belt and dual speed yet with a USB port. This is for a more reserved buyer, who feels safe with Sony whilst wanting still a good portable record player.

This turntable plays at 2 speeds (not for the hardcore vinyl enthusiast who needs 78 RPM) but includes USB, AUX and conversion software to convert your parent’s old vinyls into mp3 files. All in all this product probably suits a young person who wants to test the waters of vinyl playing and this enables you to do just that and function as a normal speaker.

I trust consumers and if it’s a good product they will refer it and popularity will increase and so forth. Makes perfect sense to me. So this player is not necessarily better or worse that number 4 but it is double the cost. Hey, you never know, maybe rightly so. Now for the features, 3-speed belt driven automatic record player with USB, AUX and conversion software. It’s a lot more appealing to the eyes, and I would not hesitate it to place it on the center of my mantle piece. Its sleek but simple wooden finish would win me over without a doubt.

So which one do you choose? If your choosing by sound, you can’t go wrong with the Jensen or Electrohome although the rest aren’t far behind. I have read rave reviews here and there about Pyle’s turntables, however, I have remained reluctant. Despite having similar features to those on the market I am not too familiar with this brand. I am placing my trust in the rave reviews (many of them) by the consumers on Amazon. The most popular of the Pyle turntables is a technology packed turntable of professional quality. Definitely not for the faint-hearted, this model is for a musician who wants to play around with pitch speed and tone. This manual turntable gives the user the more control over how they want their vinyl to sound. A little too complex for me, not my cuppa tea but this may be perfect for you if you’re a tech savvy vinyl enthusiast wanting to dabble in player controls.
Summary
Although my top 5 best record players under 100 dollars have restricted the choices, this set has not compromised the quality of my chosen record players. If I was to make my top 5 of best record players without the restriction of price tag I can tell you that at least 3 of these exact models would make the cut. So if you have a definite limit you can spend by all means choose from this list based on price. If utmost sound quality is your selling point head straight to Audio Technica it will not disappoint I promise you that. If you want absolute bang for your buck feature wise head straight to the Jensen unless you’re aiming for the stars and wanting to dabble with pitch and tone head for the Pyle turntable. And ,of course, the in-between without the complication for those more traditional vinyl enthusiasts go straight for the Electrohome.
